“the part can never be well unless the whole is well” – Plato
So it’s March 5, 2020 today as I’m writing this and as I’m sitting on my couch I wonder to myself, what is the secret to living a healthy life? I mean if you think about it, every two seconds there’s an article on Facebook stating the “secret” to losing weight or on the best practices for a healthy lifestyle. Now you have Keto, Atkins, Low Carb, No Carb, No sugar and just fad after fad. How can we figure out which one to follow? Then you have my favorites, the all of the sudden health experts that sell shakes or some sort of weight loss products, which I’m not saying that there aren’t products out there that work, there are definitely some great products and supplements out there and I truly believe in supplementation but you know what the problem is? We live in a time where people are used to technology and convenience and fast solutions and shortcuts to everything. So what is the answer? Well, there are many but the one that comes to mind, BALANCE!
The reason why I love this quote from Plato is that it has the answer to almost all of life’s problems, not just medicine and health. When it comes to our health, there are so many moving parts and the answer to health issues isn’t just cutting out carbs and sugar, it’s a bunch of moving parts. Emotional health, physical health, mental health and every aspect of life. So how do we find that balance? How do we figure out how to balance the scales of life? Well, there is no such thing as one list with all the solutions but here is a list of things you can change without going through bad diet PTSD.
LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE “Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food. Hippocrates” – dieting isn’t the answer, choosing the best foods to fuel your body, is a lifestyle. It’s okay to have chocolates, burgers, milkshakes and many other delicacies that we crave. It’s about nourishing your body and BALANCING the understanding and conviction to treat your body the way it deserves. Try to incorporate many vegetables and lean meats (or no meat if you want to go to the vegetarian/vegan route). It’s not rocket science and with google and Pinterest on deck, there will NEVER be a lack of recipes.
GO TO BED EARLIER! Studies show that a lack of sleep produces a stress hormone called cortisol, which prevents the production of the growth hormones that burn fat and regulate metabolism. So something as sleeping just 1 hour earlier a day, can DRAMATICALLY move you the right direction toward living a healthier life!
YOU DON’T NEED A 5 HOUR GYM SESH! One of the most common misconceptions about exercising is that you need to work out for hours on end and do cardio 7 days a week, to only find themselves burnt out and extremely discouraged. When in reality, if you are just starting off and want to start implementing changes in your life one step at a time, then all you need is 30 minutes for 3x a week and you will see a difference in energy, mental focus and just overall you will be in a better mood. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
FEED YOUR BODY BUT FEED YOUR MIND AS WELL Mental health may not directly affect physical health but they do indirectly affect your health. It is a proven fact that depression is connected to weight loss and unhealthy eating habits. I know for a fact that anxiety can also affect the digestive system because my wife personally went through it and gut health is the key to all of your body functioning at 100%. So do some yoga, pray, read something inspirational every day, listen to an E-Book, do some positive affirmations and speak positivity into existence over your life. Find what works for you and implement it every day. I can go on and on with tips and remedies for making and improving your life daily, and there will be more articles so stay tuned! These are only a few tips, of the iceberg, to what you can change to improve your life and make 2020 your year!
